My mom celebrated her 60th birthday over the weekend. On the 50th Anniversary of the Super Bowl to be exact. I thought she was going to bitch slap me when I joked that she was older than the Super Bowl. Some kids never learn.. Any-whoo, my mom has had a trying year, with the most difficult part being the loss of her sister shortly before Thanksgiving which left her as the sole survivor among her immediate family. She took this loss pretty hard and understandably so. As with most families, my mom is the rock of ours. She cares for her children and grandchildren so selflessly and with everything she has all while maintaining a grace and elegance that is enviable to most.
Since this year was a milestone birthday we wanted to do something for her that celebrated all of her awesomeness and what better way to do that then surprising the bejesus out of her? Planning and preparation started in November when I was trying to decide if this was even a good idea or if it was going to get me a “stern talking to” a la my high school days. I remember my mom saying at some point that if anyone ever threw her a surprise party then she would kill them. I’m sure she meant that in the sweetest way, so I decided to take my chances and go for it. After all, she brought me into this world and I suppose she can take me out of it. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that.
When one is throwing a surprise party, several things must be taken into account:
If you’re ever on the fence about throwing someone a surprise party, my advice is to go for it. There really is nothing better than seeing the love and appreciation from the guest of honor in knowing that all of those people are there for her. Priceless.
